2023-24 NBA odds: Wembanyama’s triple-double impacts Rookie of the Year race

If favorite Victor Wembanyama goes on to win the NBA Rookie of the Year, Monday night’s game might be the one that clinched it for the budding San Antonio Spurs star.

Wembanyama had a triple-double — 27 points, 14 rebounds, 10 blocks — to go along with five assists and two steals in 29 minutes against the Toronto Raptors in a 122-99 win.

As a result, Wembayama put some extra distance ahead of Oklahoma City‘s Chet Holmgren on the odds list.

Wembanyama’s odds moved to -600 (bet $10 to win $11.67 total) from -270 in the past week.

The 7-foot-4 Wembanyama was the second choice as recently as Jan. 18 after opening the season as the favorite at -150.

Holmgren’s odds lengthened to +500 from +210.

The 7-foot-1 Holmgren was the second pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, but missed last season with a foot injury.

Wembanyama became the first player with 10 blocks and five assists in under 30 minutes played in NBA history.

Wembanyama had the first triple-double with blocks since Atlanta‘s Clint Capela had 13 points, 19 rebounds and 10 blocks against Minnesota on Jan. 22, 2021. That was also the last time anyone in the NBA blocked 10 shots in a game.

Wembanyama is the first rookie with 150 blocks, 150 assists and 50 steals in a season since San Antonio’s Tim Duncan in 1997-98.

FOX Sports NBA Analyst Ric Bucher lauded the duo of young “bigs” for quickly molding their games to the NBA.

“Chet Holmgren and Victor Wembanyama have turned in more than a few performances this season worthy of All-Star status,” Bucher said.
