2023 NFL MVP race, odds: Lamar Jackson is new MVP favorite; Brock Purdy falters

And just like that, there is another new MVP favorite.

The two front-runners entering Week 16 happened to be facing off on Monday Night Football: San Francisco’sBrock Purdy (-200) and Baltimore’sLamar Jackson (+500).

However, once the dust settled Monday, those odds were … no longer the same.

The Ravens pounded the 49ers in San Francisco, winning 33-19 in a game in which the Ravens never trailed after taking a 10-5 lead early in the second quarter.

Jackson — the league’s unanimous MVP in 2019 — put on a typical performance, finishing 23-for-35 passing for 252 yards and two scores. He also rushed seven times for 45 yards.

Purdy, the leader in the MVP clubhouse, was not so typical.

He completed 18 of 32 passes for 255 yards, no touchdowns and four interceptions.

Entering Monday, he had seven interceptions total in 14 starts this season.

And with that, the MVP odds underwent a major facelift.

2023-24 NFL MVP ODDS: *

Lamar Jackson, Ravens: -170 (bet $10 to win $15.88 total)

Christian McCaffrey, 49ers: +470 (bet $10 to win $57 total)

Tua Tagovailoa, Dolphins: +900 (bet $10 to win $100 total)

Josh Allen, Bills: +1300 (bet $10 to win $140 total)

Brock Purdy, 49ers: +1300 (bet $10 to win $140 total)

Dak Prescott, Cowboys: +1900 (bet $10 to win $200 total)

Tyreek Hill, Dolphins: +2200 (bet $10 to win $230 total)

Jalen Hurts, Eagles: +3000 (bet $10 to win $310 total)

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs: +6000 (bet $10 to win $610 total)

* odds as of 12/26/2023

That’s correct: Purdy has dropped all the way to tied for fourth on the oddsboard, a stunning fall from just days ago when he sat as the -200 favorite.

On Tuesday morning, Colin Cowherd put the MVP competition in perspective after Baltimore’s dominant win.

“Stop with the Tua, Dak, Brock Purdy nonsense,” Cowherd said on “The Herd.” ” … If you were a scout and were sent to this game, and they said, ‘Gimme a take on the two quarterbacks,’ your take on Brock Purdy would be, ‘Kind of a guy, could be a backup.’ And your take on Lamar Jackson would be, ‘Holy God, I’ve never seen a player like that.’

” … [Monday] night is what a Most Valuable Player looks like. … [Lamar Jackson] was easily the best player on the field.”

FOX Sports NFL Analyst and former New York Jet Willie Colon also discussed the performances of Purdy and Jackson on Tuesday’s edition of “The Carton Show.”

“What was interesting about Brock Purdy [on Monday]: For the first time, you could tell Brock Purdy was pressing, and he couldn’t answer,” Colon said. “He just seemed rattled. And Lamar Jackson was in a groove.”

Jackson’s groove extended past Monday night. In fact, during Baltimore’s current five-game winning streak, Jackson has nine touchdowns to just two interceptions.

“This is on the road, in Levi [Stadium], he put the world on notice,” Colon said of Jackson’s MVP candidacy. “How many bells I gotta jingle for you to realize there’s no other candidate? He is the MVP.”

Craig Carton doubled-down on Colon’s assertion.

“I thought it was the MVP bowl [Monday] night and Lamar Jackson won it.”
