2023 NFL MVP race, odds: Lamar Jackson pulls away from field, huge favorite
When it comes to the NFL MVP award, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has made his final statement. And it was loud and clear.
It’s over.
Jackson and the Ravens cruised to a 56-19 win against the Miami Dolphins in Week 17. His MVP odds moved considerably after that game. Against Miami, he went 18-for-21 passing (a season-best 85.7%) for 321 yards, five touchdowns, no interceptions and a perfect 158.3 passer rating.
That performance helped shorten his odds to -20000 from -9000. In the final week of the season, Jackson didn’t suit up for his squad’s contest against the Steelers since the Ravens had already secured the AFC’s top playoff seed.
Heading into the first week of the playoffs — for which Baltimore has earned a bye — the quarterback’s odds have lengthened slightly to -10000.
Here’s a look at the updated MVP betting board.
2023-24 NFL MVP ODDS: *
Lamar Jackson, Ravens: -10000 (bet $10 to win $10.10 total)
Dak Prescott, Cowboys: +1800 (bet $10 to win $190 total)
Brock Purdy, 49ers: +2500 (bet $10 to win $260 total)
Josh Allen, Bills: +3000 (bet $10 to win $310 total)
Christian McCaffrey, 49ers: +4000 (bet $10 to win $410 total)
Tyreek Hill, Dolphins: +10000 (bet $10 to win $1,010 total)
Tua Tagovailoa, Dolphins: +12500 (bet $10 to win $1,260 total)
* odds as of 1/8/2024
On the season, Jackson has passed for 3,678 yards and 24 touchdowns. With a 13-4 overall record, Baltimore has secured a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.
In the Week 17 showdown against the Dolphins, the QB had his third career game with a perfect passer rating, tied for the second most in NFL history behind retired Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (four).
That was Jackson’s first five-touchdown game since his 2019 NFL MVP season.
According to Ravens offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley, “Without question, Lamar Jackson is MVP.”
On last Monday’s NFL on FOX Podcast, NFL Insider Dave Helman echoed a similar sentiment regarding the Ravens quarterback.
“I think he wrapped up his second NFL MVP on Sunday afternoon.” Helman said. “Going against a playoff team, one week after he had a phenomenal game against San Francisco, No. 1 seed at stake.
“He threw more touchdowns than incompletions.”
FOX Sports NFL Analyst Geoff Schwartz said he expects Jackson and the Ravens to earn the two big trophies, the MVP for Jackson and the Vince Lombardi Trophy for winning Super Bowl LVIII.
“The Ravens should be the Super Bowl favorites after the demolition of the Miami Dolphins” Schwartz said. “Quarterback Lamar Jackson is the clear MVP favorite.”
Far in Jackson’s rearview mirror is Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott (+1800), with San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy third (+2500).
