2024-25 College Football Playoff odds: Georgia favored; Michigan odds lengthen
The 2024-25 college football season kicks off in a little more than one month, so it’s time to look ahead to next season’s betting odds.
Big news regarding head coaching changes out of Tuscaloosa and out of Ann Arbor caused major shifts on the board.
For example, after Nick Saban’s retirement, Bama’s odds have moved from +550 to +1500. These are the Tide’s longest title futures since 2008.
And despite winning it all last season, Michigan is not the favorite. In addition to head coach Jim Harbaugh taking his talents to the NFL, so did Wolverines stars J.J. McCarthy and Blake Corum.
Let’s dive into the odds for some of the top teams at FanDuel Sportsbook as of July 23.
CFP NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ODDS:
Georgia Bulldogs: +300 (bet $10 to win $40 total)
Ohio State Buckeyes: +400 (bet $10 to win $50 total)
Oregon Ducks: +800 (bet $10 to win $90 total)
Texas Longhorns: +850 (bet $10 to win $95 total)
Alabama Crimson Tide: +1500 (bet $10 to win $160 total)
Ole Miss Rebels: +1500 (bet $10 to win $160 total)
LSU Tigers: +1700 (bet $10 to win $180 total)
Penn State Nittany Lions: +2000 (bet $10 to win $210 total)
Notre Dame Fighting Irish: +2200 (bet $10 to win $230 total)
Florida State Seminoles: +2800 (bet $10 to win $290 total)
Michigan Wolverines: +2800 (bet $10 to win $290 total)
Since the CFP is set to expand to 12 teams next season, let’s now take a deeper look at what we know about the five current favorites.
2023-24 finish: BeatFlorida State 63-3, Capital One Orange Bowl
2024-25 title odds: +300
What to know for next season: The Bulldogs continue to stack the roster with four- and five-star players. One new talented player the Dawgs added to their roster through the portal is former Florida running back Trevor Etienne. Etienne, who ran for 1,472 yards in two seasons for the Gators, is the younger brother of Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne. Also, QB Carson Beck announced he would return for his fifth season after throwing for 3,738 yards and 22 touchdowns.
2023-24 finish: Lost to Missouri 14-3,Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic
2024-25 title odds: +420
What to know for next season: The Buckeyes got a huge boost when stars JT Tuimoloau and TreVeyon Henderson put the NFL on hold and opted to stay in Columbus. That helps ease the pain of Ohio State losing three in a row to rival Michigan. Then, starting quarterback Kyle McCord transferred to Syracuse. This means that freshman Lincoln Kienholz, five-star recruit Air Noland and Devin Brown are expected to compete for the starting job during camp. One of the gems of the Buckeyes’ recruiting class is receiver Jeremiah Smith, the nation’s No. 1 prospect.
RELATED: Georgia, Ohio State vs. the field
Georgia and Ohio State are so far ahead of the other teams that one sportsbook is offering a wager that pits Georgia or Ohio State against the entire college football field!
FOX Sports betting analyst Patrick Everson spoke with college football sharp Paul Stone, who shared why this is a bet worth taking.
“I think Georgia and Ohio State are gonna be everybody’s 1 and 1A,” Stone said. “If forced to take one side or the other, I’d probably take the Georgia/Ohio State daily double, and let the other 132 teams take their shot.”
2023-24 finish: Beat Liberty 45-6, Vrbo Fiesta Bowl
2024-25 title odds: +800
What to know for next season: Coach Dan Lanning announced he was staying in Oregon and wouldn’t be pursuing the Alabama job after Saban retired. The next task for Lanning will be managing his QB room. Both Oklahoma QB Dillon Gabriel and UCLA QB Dante Moore transferred to the team after the season. Gabriel started 24 regular-season games for the Sooners over the past two seasons, completing 66% of his passes and throwing for 6,828 yards, 55 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. It will be his sixth year playing college football after he spent three years at UCF and two at OU. Moore started nine games as a freshman for UCLA, completing 53.5% of his passes for 1,610 yards, 11 TDs and nine INTs.
2023-24 finish: Lost to Washington 37-31, Allstate Sugar Bowl (CFP semifinals)
2024-25 title odds: +850
What to know for next season: Texas is in great shape because its quarterback room appears to be fully loaded. But how long will it last? Sophomore QB Quinn Ewers will return to the fold next season after leading the Longhorns to a CFP berth this season, throwing for 3,161 yards, 21 touchdowns and just six interceptions in the process. However, his backup is no regular backup — it’s Arch Manning, the top quarterback recruit in the country in 2023. Manning will be entering his sophomore season, while Ewers enters his junior year. Either the Longhorns will face a QB dilemma next season, or they will be set up nicely for years to come.
2023-24 finish: Lost to Michigan 27-20 (OT), Rose Bowl (CFP semifinals)
2024-25 title odds: +1500
What to know for next season: The Tide hired Washington’s Kalen DeBoer after Saban’s exit. But with starting QB Jalen Milroe returning after finishing sixth in the voting for the Heisman Trophy, Bama should be in good shape at the position. He was briefly benched last season but started in the SEC Championship Game win over Georgia and earned MVP honors. Bama has a tough schedule; it has five top-20 opponents on the slate. However, four of those teams come to Tuscaloosa.
