The 2024 college football season hasn’t even kicked off yet and there’s already a change at the top of the odds board for the Heisman Trophy Award.

Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel is now the new co-favorite to win the Heisman. His odds have jumped to +800 from +1100, surpassing Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers and moving him into a tie with Georgia quarterback Carson Beck.

LSU’sJayden Daniels had similar odds entering the 2023 season (+1100) before winning the award.

Ewers opened as the betting favorite, then Beck quickly jumped up the board to become a co-favorite at +750.

Gabriel’s recent rise to become the co-betting favorite seemingly came out of nowhere as it’s July and teams haven’t begun camp yet for the fall. That said, Gabriel has been one of the best quarterbacks in college football over the last few seasons. He’s also a sixth-year senior and is starting for an Oregon squad that’s among the few favorites to win the national title in 2024, so the correlation makes sense.

Gabriel transferred to Eugene after throwing for 3,660 yards, 30 touchdowns and six interceptions to go with 12 rushing touchdowns at Oklahoma last season. He led the Sooners to a 9-3 record.

Fun facts: Gabriel was also recently listed as the fourth-highest-rated quarterback in the highly anticipated “College Football 25” video game. If you’re curious, two of the three quarterbacks rated above Gabriel in the game are Beck and Ewers.

Beck, the UGA signal-caller, helped lead his Dawgs to an undefeated regular season in 2023. After losing 27-24 to Alabama in the SEC title game, Georgia’s No. 6 ranking kept the team out of the College Football Playoff.

The Bulldogs ended 2023 with a lopsided 63-3 victory over FSU in the Orange Bowl, and Beck finished the season with 3,941 passing yards and 24 touchdowns.

While Ewers is rated above Gabriel and Beck in the video game, he trails them on the odds board. The Texas quarterback finished last season with 3,479 passing yards and 22 touchdowns. Ewers and the Longhorns got into the playoff committee’s final four but lost 37-31 to Washington in the Sugar Bowl semifinal.

Colorado’s Sanders is actually the highest-rated quarterback in “College Football 25,” but that isn’t reflected on the odds board. He’s tied for the 13th-best odds to win the award. However, that could be more due to Colorado’s perception as a non-title contender than Sanders’ skillset. He threw for 3,230 yards, 27 touchdowns and three interceptions last year.

Watch Noah Fifita and Cam Rising

January is for mining value in the Heisman market. I’m not betting on any of the favorites now because those prices will mostly hold steady through the summer.

I’m interested in two longer shots: Noah Fifita (+2000 at time of pick, currently +4000) and Cam Rising (+7000 at time of pick, currently +4000).

It’s undoubtedly Fifita’s show in Tucson going forward, and he has a stable of talented wideouts, led by sophomore Tetairoa McMillan.

Meanwhile, Rising is a longer shot with legs. He threw for 3,000 yards and accounted for 32 touchdowns two seasons ago, but missed all of 2023 after tearing his ACL in the Rose Bowl.

Utah should be favored in its first six games and if Rising puts up numbers, those 60- and 70-1 odds will evaporate.
