2024 MLB Cy Young Award odds, race: Skenes, Wheeler chasing Sale in NL

The MLB Cy Young race is heating up.

In the AL, Tarik Skubal is the odds-on favorite to win the honor, at 12-4 on the season in 22 starts for the Detroit Tigers. He has a 2.57 ERA — second in the league — with 162 strikeouts (third in the league).

He was named to his first All-Star Game this season.

Over in the NL, the Braves‘ Chris Sale is in the driver’s seat, but has a few star pitchers firmly in his rearview mirror.

Sale is 13-3 as a starter, has a 2.71 ERA (fourth) and has 155 strikeouts (sixth).

American League Cy Young Odds:

Tarik Skubal, Detroit Tigers: -170 (bet $10 to win $15.88 total)

Corbin Burnes, Baltimore Orioles: +150 (bet $10 to win $25 total)

Seth Lugo, Kansas City Royals: +1000 (bet $10 to win $110 total)

George Kirby, Seattle Mariners: +1800 (bet $10 to win $190 total)

National League Cy Young Odds:

Chris Sale, Atlanta Braves: +110 (bet $10 to win $21 total)

Paul Skenes, Pittsburgh Pirates: +200 (bet $10 to win $30 total)

Zack Wheeler,Philadelphia Phillies: +250 (bet $10 to win $35 total)

Hunter Greene, Cincinnati Reds: +1500 (bet $10 to win $160 total)

Dylan Cease, San Diego Padres: +1600 (bet $10 to win $170 total)

Making a move up the board over the past week is Philadelphia’s Wheeler, who moved from +400 to +250.

Wheeler has won four of his last five starts, and has 36 strikeouts over that span. In the Phillies’ 6-0 win over Seattle on Aug. 4, he struck out nine in eight shutout innings, surrendering just two hits.

Wheeler is now 11-5 on the season with a 2.77 ERA.

Skenes, who is also chasing Sale, had arguably his worst performance of the season in his last start, at least by his standards.

Skenes struck out four batters — he’s struck out fewer than four only once this season — in 5.1 innings against Arizona on Aug. 4. It was his third-shortest outing of the year, and he gave up five hits and two earned runs in the Pirates’ 6-5 loss.
