2024 MLB Cy Young Award odds: Skubal, Wheeler favorites; Sale, Skenes rising
The MLB All-Star break kicks off this weekend, and now that we’re nearing the season’s midpoint, it is the perfect time to take a look at the odds for the Cy Young award.
Tarik Skubal and Zack Wheeler have been the odds-on favorites in the American and National Leagues, respectively, for most of the last two months and their odds have only gotten shorter over that time period.
Skubal is 10-3 on the season in 18 starts for the Detroit Tigers. He has a 2.37 ERA — third-lowest in the league — with 132 strikeouts. As a result of his massive performance so far, he was named to his first All-Star Game this season. His odds to win the AL Cy Young shifted to +110 from +250 on May 9.
Over in the NL, Wheeler has similarly held control over the betting board since an early season injury to Spencer Strider shook up the lines. Wheeler has been dynamite in 2024 with a 10-4 record in 19 starts. He has a 2.70 ERA — fourth-lowest in the league — with 126 strikeouts. His odds to win the NL Cy Young have shortened from +230 to +150 over the last eight weeks.
Let’s dive into the most recent odds at DraftKings Sportsbook.

While Skubal and Wheeler have been dominating all season, unlike the MVP races, both Cy Youngs will be tightly contested in the season’s second half.
Corbin Burnes (+250) is nipping at Skubal’s heels in the AL, while Chris Sale (+160) is this close to Wheeler (+150) in the NL after he held +3750 odds on May 9.
Sale has the most wins in the majors at 12, after notching 11 total wins in the last four seasons, with a 2.74 ERA and 136 strikeouts. The 35-year-old has turned back the clock.
However, the hottest story in all of baseball has been the meteoric rise of Paul Skenes. Selected first overall in the 2023 MLB Draft, he made his first start for the Pirates a mere two months ago. In that time, he has had 11 starts for a 6-0 record with a 1.90 ERA, 89 strikeouts and a .920 WHIP.
And hours after he proved his worth by throwing 11 strikeouts in seven no-hit innings in a 1-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers, it was announced he was starting in the All-Star Game.
Is there anything the pehnom can’t do?
On the night of his first start, Skenes had +15000 odds to win the Cy Young, now he sits as the third-shortest NL favorite at +700.
Fun fact: The only rookie to win the Cy Young was Fernando Venezuela in 1981.
Before Skenes was announced as a starter, FOX Sports Lead MLB Analyst, and Hall of Fame pitching great, John Smoltz, said the LSU product certainly deserved the opportunity.
“From a standpoint of excitement, yeah — and stuff and raw talent, probably yes,” Smoltz exclaimed.
“Whenever, though, you’re talking about rewarding somebody for starting the All-Star Game, and somebody who’s pitched all year and is deserving, I think that’s where the nod should go. But I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that he could start, based on the timing of what other pitchers are able to do or not able to do.”
