2024 NFL odds: Drake Maye struggles in camp; Brissett favored to start

It looks like the veteran has the edge over the rookie in the New England Patriots‘ quarterback duel.

Jacoby Brissett has operated with the Patriots’ top unit for the majority of training camp, while No. 3 pick Drake Maye has commanded the second unit. And with that, it appears Brissett is firmly in the driver’s seat when it comes to who will start under center Week 1.

PATRIOTS WEEK 1 STARTING QB:

Jacoby Brissett: -1200 (bet $10 to win $10.83 total)

Drake Maye: +630 (bet $10 to win $73 total)

Recent reports have suggested that Maye has struggled in training camp, but on Monday, NFL insider Albert Breer brought clarity to the situation.

“Drake Maye has had rough moments, to be sure, but New England Patriots people attribute that to him running with the second team, and how the team’s offensive line depth issue has really shown up with that group,” Breer reported. “What’s impressed his coaches most is how good of a processor he is on the field — he can go, in his progression, from one to two to three fast, and even threw a touchdown pass to his fourth read in red-zone drills the other day. He sees things right away, and his footwork has come a long way, too. That said, to this point, Jacoby Brissett has been the best quarterback in camp.”

However, last week, Colin Cowherd presented a third option for the Pats on “The Herd.”

“Drake Maye comes into an organization — they don’t know offense. It’s a defensive culture. And they hired Jerod Mayo, who’s [Bill] Belichick. … So this was always gonna be the toughest lift for any of these [rookie] quarterbacks. … PFF ranks New England’s wide receiving corps, all Belichick drafted, as 32nd. PFF ranks their running back group, all Belichick drafted, as 25th. Their offensive line as 28th. What does that tell you? That the sixth-round quarterback Joe Milton is going to probably win the job because he’s the bigger, stronger, faster, more dynamic athlete.”

Drake Maye struggles in Patriots camp

The Pats selected Milton — he stands 6-foot-5, 246 pounds — out of Tennessee in the sixth round of the 2024 draft. Last season, he threw for 2,769 yards and 20 touchdowns, and rushed for 292 yards and six scores for the Volunteers.
