The USA got a big scare leading up to the Olympics in one of its exhibition matchups against South Sudan. In a game in which the Americans were favored by 41.5 points, they narrowly escaped, 101-100.

The United States redeemed itself by defeating South Sudan 103-86 in its second game of the Olympic tournament. The USA’s odds shortened to -600 from -550 after the win.

In their first contest of the Paris Games, the men defeated Serbia 110-84.

Team USA closed out the group stage with a 104-83 victory over Puerto Rico, led by Anthony Edwards 26-point effort.

Who’s the most important player for Team USA?

Germany is another team whose odds moved, and like the USA, its roster has several NBA players.

After defeating Japan 97-77, the team’s gold medal futures surged to +1800 from +3000. In the win, Franz Wagner had 22 points, followed by Daniel Theis’ 18 points, Mo Wagner’s 15 points and 13 from Dennis Schroder.

Germany defeated France 85-71 in their group stage finale, shortening their odds to +800.

By earning the top seed, Team USA gets to avoid the two squads with the second-best odds (Germany and Canada), as well as, Victor Wembanyama and host nation France, until the gold medal game.

U.S. coach Steve Kerr is pleased with Team USA’s ability to adjust on a game-by-game basis.

“The guys, I think, are well prepared for it,” he said. “They’ve done a great job of not only preparing on the floor but adapting to these weird circumstances of having 12 starters in the NBA adjust to being a 12-man team here and some guys playing certain nights, not playing other nights. They’ve all really committed to the goal. And the goal is within sight now.”

Next up for the United States men’s team is a matchup against Brazil on Tuesday, August 6. If they advance to the semifinals, the winner of Serbia and Australia awaits on Thursday, August 8.

The Gold Medal game takes place on Saturday, August 10.
