2024 Super Bowl LVIII odds: OT ending results in bad beat for 49ers-Chiefs Over bettors

National Football League
Updated Feb. 12, 2024 12:55 a.m. ET

Super Bowl LVIII between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs was one for the ages but a majority of Over/Under total bettors suffered a bad beat due to an NFL overtime rule.

The O/U was at 47.5 for most of the two-week run-up to the Big Game, before Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs beat Brock Purdy and the 49ers 25-22 in OT on Sunday.

Over 47.5 bettors lost by the slimmest of margins, as the teams combined for 47 points. An NFL rule states that an extra point will not be attempted if a winning touchdown is scored.

Some books closed at 47, meaning the O/U was a push.
