Cardinals sign infielder Max Moroff to minor league deal
ST. LOUIS — The Cardinals added some experienced depth to their organization on Tuesday, signing infielder Max Moroff to a minor league deal with an invite to major league spring training.

Moroff, 27, has played in 104 major league games over four seasons with the Pirates and Indians. The switch-hitter spent the 2020 season at the Mets’ alternate training site in Brooklyn but did not spend any time in the big leagues. He has a .183 career batting average with a .596 OPS and seven homers through 244 plate appearances. Moroff’s greatest asset as a major leaguer has been his versatility and sure-handedness on defense, as he’s played 55 games at second base, 32 at shortstop and eight at third base in the big leagues.
With Brad Miller and Kolten Wong currently free agents and Max Schrock now in the Cubs organization after being claimed off waivers in October, Moroff gives the Cardinals some experienced middle-infield depth behind projected starters Tommy Edman and Paul DeJong. Aside from Edman and DeJong, Edmundo Sosa is the only other middle infielder on the club’s current 40-man roster, so Moroff may have a solid chance to break camp with the major league team depending on how much more depth the Cardinals add before the season begins.
