Eagles’ Jalen Hurts set to play vs. Cowboys despite ankle injury chatter

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is healthy and ready for the team’s Week 10 tilt against the Dallas Cowboys. Right, Nick Sirianni?

When asked why Hurts was listed for rest when the 26-year-old hadn’t been previously, Sirianni said, “He (Hurts) was dealing with — it was on the injury report — the ankle. And, you know, making sure we’re cautious with everything.”

After Sirianni was told that the ankle wasn’t listed as the reason on the injury report, and as another reporter asked if Hurts indeed had an ankle injury, a member of the Eagles’ media relations staff chimed in to say the listing was “rest.”

Another reporter asked again if Hurts was dealing with an ankle injury. Sirianni quickly backtracked, saying “No. Rest.”

“I thought you were talking about something else,” Sirianni added.

Hurts was listed as a limited participant in practice Wednesday with the non-injury designation of rest. During the portion of practice open to reporters Wednesday, he didn’t participate in individual drills with fellow QBs Kenny Pickett and Tanner McKee. Hurts’ participation was listed as full Thursday and Friday. There’s no playing status for Hurts on the injury report, which means he is set to play Sunday.

It’s unclear whether Sirianni made an honest mistake or if the Eagles’ star signal-caller is indeed dealing with an injury.

Hurts was slow to get up after scrambling and getting sacked in last week’s 28-23 victory over Jacksonville. He didn’t miss any time or get evaluated in the medical tent.

If Hurts isn’t active for Sunday, the Eagles (6-2) would presumably turn to Pickett, whom they acquired from Pittsburgh in March. Pickett has appeared in one game this season. Meanwhile, the Cowboys (3-5) are starting Cooper Rush at quarterback, with Dak Prescott suffering a hamstring injury in the team’s Week 9 road loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

Both of Hurts’ top receivers, A.J. Brown (knee) and DeVonta Smith (hamstring), are also clear for Sunday.

Hurts has totaled 1,774 passing yards, 10 passing touchdowns, four interceptions and a 102.4 passer rating this season, while completing 69.8% of his passes. He has also rushed for 322 yards and eight touchdowns. The two-time Pro Bowler missed two games due to a shoulder injury in 2022, which is when the Eagles reached Super Bowl LVII.

Philadelphia has rebounded after a shaky start, winning four consecutive games after beginning the season 2-2. The Eagles split the season series with the Cowboys last season, with both teams winning on their respective home turf. That said, they haven’t won in Dallas since 2017.
