Kia’s next-gen Sedona sheds minivan vibe
Kia’s fourth-generation Sedona is coming into focus as the Korean automaker details the redesign of the minivan known as the Carnival in its home market. And the new iteration is looking more like a luxe SUV than the current family hauler it’s expected to replace next year in the U.S.
Minivans are suffering a similar fate as cars, with falling sales as consumer demand rises for utility vehicles in every shape and size. So just as automakers try to remake bland sedans into sporty four-door coupes, Kia is pitching the next Sedona as a “grand utility vehicle.”
Kia could use a jolt in the segment. U.S. sales of the Sedona tallied just under 16,000 in 2019, a decline of 11 percent, placing it in last place behind peers such as the Dodge Grand Caravan, Honda Odyssey, Chrysler Pacifica and Toyota Sienna.
