Mazda leans into plug-in hybrids with flagship CX-90 crossover

Mazda’s new flagship three-row CX-90 crossover steps into the lineup to replace the CX-9, offering more space for passengers and cargo and two powertrain options — including the brand’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle in the U.S.

The 2024 CX-90 sits on the Japanese automaker’s new larger platform, tuned for enhanced driving dynamics with a front-engine, rear-wheel-bias layout.

Mazda is leaning into plug-in hybrid electric vehicles ahead of electric vehicles, unlike many of its mainstream and luxury rivals. Following the CX-90, it will launch the CX-70 five-seater, which also will use the new platform and offer a PHEV variant.

“A growing customer base that’s interested in electric wants to contribute to the environmental benefits it provides, but maybe aren’t quite ready to take the plunge on pure battery,” Jeff Guyton, CEO of Mazda North America operations, told Automotive News.
