Sonic Automotive CEO David Smith arrested on assault charges

Smith, 46, spent a day in the Mecklenburg County Jail in North Carolina after being arrested on four charges, including assault by strangulation. The company’s board said in a statement that it “remains steadfast in its support” of the executive, who told the board he expects to be exonerated.
