Switzerland vs. New Zealand highlights: Switzerland wins Group A, New Zealand out
The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup continued Sunday (on FOX and the FOX Sports app), as Switzerland (1-1-0) held New Zealand (1-0-1) to a scoreless tie 0-0 at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, New Zealand in a Group A tilt.
With this tie result, Switzerland finishes the group stage in first place in Group A, and Norway finishes second based on goal differential. New Zealand’s Football Ferns are eliminated, becoming the first host or co-host in the Women’s World Cup to go out in the group stage.
New Zealand put up a vicious fight and did not give Switzerland an easy path to the top Group A spot. The Football Ferns were on the attack for 90-plus minutes, but they never managed to find the net. Switzerland’s endurance paid off, and La Nati has confidence going into the knockout stage.
95′: One last try
In a last-ditch effort to score, New Zealand goalkeeper Victoria Esson came upfield into the opposing box and managed to get her head on the cross, but it flew wide.
79′: Brick wall
Goalkeeper Thalmann continued to show strong as Switzerland was determined to keep New Zealand off the board, since a tie would place Switzerland at first in Group A.
26′: Cool as a cucumber
Under New Zealand’s offensive assault, Thalmann kept her wits about her, punching away every attack by the Football Ferns.
23′: Almost!
Jacqui Hand came streaking into the box, but her flick bounce heartbreakingly off the frame. New Zealand continued to apply pressure offensively.
18′: Finding chances
New Zealand found their first big opportunity to score when the ball got loose in Switzerland’s box following a free kick, but Swiss keeper Gaelle Thalmann scooped it up.
